It was discussed recently at a United Nations conference the dire need for more conservation and sustainable water management. Without such interventions, many people will not have water.
According to Prime Minister Raila Odinga of Kenya, Africa, “9.9 million Kenyans are in need of food aid and over 70 percent of water pans and rivers have dried up; water is in short supply in over 80 percent of the country.” (Capital News) Read more here for personal accounts on the effects of the drought.

This last week of April 2009 marks the painful losses of lives of innocent
children in Marsabit. Mpuyanai Lesuipa, 14 years and in
grade six at Kamboe CDP community was driving a group of 14 donkeys to
the forest of Marsabit to look for precious water for her parents with 13
other girls of her age. It is a common practice for girls to relieve
their mothers during school holidays in all domestic chores. As they
approached the source of water in the thick Marsabit forest, suddenly
bandits attacked them from the bush. The first bullet to be fired caught
Mpuyanai and she fell down and died immediately. The rest of the girls
ran for their dear lives in different directions in the forest and escaped
without being hurt. All the 14donkeys were taken by the bandits.
It all happened on Tuesday morning when a group of cattle raiders raided
Badassa community near the forest and killed a grade seven boy who was
an orphan. The clan of the deceased went on revenge mission to the
neigbouring community of Karare and unfortunately got our beloved
sponsored child. The revenge mission continued with the clans of Mpuyanai
going back to the opposite community where a 23year school leaver was
killed as he was herding near the forest on Wednesday. Marsabit forest
now signifies a black spot where serial killings have been the order of
the day.
We are worried that innocent children are dying for a course they do not
know the origin.

There seems to be a serious drought setting in after the failure of the long rains. The animals are losing their body weights and water is now very scarce. The community of Lakartinya have to spend many hours into the night in search of water. This makes us appreciate your support for the water tank. This will be bringing long term solution for water especially in the school.
Due to the lack of water, waterborne disease like cholera becomes a major threat. Our Health program is working to establish a treatment camp not too far from Karare.Malnutrition also is another threat and we are working to provide supplementary feeding therapy to the very malnourished children.
